Spring Gardening

Biden & Portulaca

We have a very short Spring season and seem to have a never-ending summer. Our Spring is weeks of blooming trees and shrubs, displaying their beautiful blossoms, week after week. It is my best time in the entire year to take photos and videos. I walk through neighborhoods and find old and new dogwood trees and native azaleas with breathtaking colors.

Spring is also when I plan my garden, buy potting soil for flower pots, and arrange them in the shade or sun based on what I have growing in the pot. I can’t tell you how different this year has been for my planning process. Garden centers have the same flowers and plants but prices have increased drastically. A fact that we all face and didn’t expect it. Working on creating a flower or vegetable garden is time-consuming, physically demanding, and expensive, but I can’t even imagine not having a garden. Watering, pulling weeds, cutting flowers for the breakfast table, is what I look forward to all the way through the first freeze 👩🏻‍🌾

Gardens possess personalities

Gardens possess personalities

A garden lined with flowering plants, carefully lined, and color coordinated makes me admire the gardener who invested time and patience to create it.

How we choose Our flowers, herbs, and even the flower pots in our garden is a reflection of our personality. Colors of our flowering plants, the shape of our garden, choosing perennials or annuals sends a signal of how we think and see the world around us.

When I choose to create a garden I pay attention to how the sun will pour over the space, and how they are placed with the older plants. When I figure that out I start visiting my nurseries and purchase my plants based on what I fall in love with. Color, shape, how rare they are, or replacing an old plant that didn’t survive the winter.

Gaura lindheimeri, is one of my most favorite large flowering plants. They have a free-flowing, angelic personality that my eyes crave to see.

Geraniums are my trustworthy plants; they are bold, resilient, long lasting, and beautiful on their own in any pot. No matter how wilted and unkept they are, I grab them from clearance racks and bring them back to life.

There are many annuals I repeat every year like impatiens for my shady corners. They spread and bloom all summer and their colors add a pop to forgotten corners.

Next time you walk by a garden after you admire the hard work it took to create it, you can try to guess the personality of the gardener behind it.

A lovely garden begins with your pots

It is not just for holding your flowering plants or herbs, for me a flower pot also needs to stand beautiful by itself in my garden.

When in full bloom I bring the smaller pots in to add color to our family room, and most often they are the main object of my photos a hobby I enjoy.

I have flower pots that are more than 10 years old, and every now and then I purchase one for a special place, a corner or a spot on the porch and the garden.

I choose them by color, size, and always stay in the same color scheme, and yes I do love hanging baskets even though they need to be maintained more, since birds and squirrels enjoy pulling their liners and love to swing from them.

To show off  our indoor plants at their best we are getting creative with how we place them around the house or in the office.

We used crystal bowls, baskets, buckets in metal, ceramic, plastic, and even clay lanterns. For times we have company and forgotten to buy cut flowers we bring in our flowering pots, even the herbs indoors & give our rustic pots a make over. It is fun you should try it.🌿

Arranging Herbs

They can be mixed in with flowers or different varieties arranged in one planter or vase. Herbs like fern leaf dill, french lavender, and marjoram are great additions to flower arrangements because of their color and beautiful texture.

The best reason for adding herbs to an arrangements is the fact that you can freeze and use your herbs when you are preparing a meal.
