Before you say oh no way cabbage😏let me tell you when you cook it with the right ingredients it is delicious😊in the fall you need the goodness of this beautiful vegetable in some salad or soup. I pulled out the crockpot and sliced half a red cabbage. Added chopped carrots, cilantro, bell pepper, celery, any type of beans, a can of chopped tomatoes, chicken broth, or beef broth. I had some chicken sausage which was more sweet than spicy so I made the soup sweet and tangy. At the very end, I mixed raw sugar and balsamic vinegar added to the pot and let it simmer before serving it. I hope you give cabbage a try this fall & winter season🥰
I planted my mini sunflowers from seeds my neighbor gave me when I complimented their beautiful thick row of sunflowers. It takes only a few weeks for the green plant to pop out of the ground, but the flower itself takes many weeks to open up & grow its beautiful round face. I think sunflowers add a natural feel & look to a garden which I love. When they are in full bloom yellow finch, & butterflies are constant visitors🌻
I have done it a few times, googling how to replace an ingredient when I’m in the middle of cooking and noticed I don’t have everything I need. Searching: What can I use instead of buttermilk? Or what is a good substitute for dry rosemary? With new recipes, when I have to replace any ingredients I can’t tell the difference in its flavor or its presentation, but with an old recipe, I can certainly see the differences? Small changes in flavor, consistency, and most importantly how your stomach feels!
When I was little sitting at the breakfast table my grandmother will decide what to make for lunch and sometimes for dinner. She would name a few dishes and make a decision, pick up her shopping basket, and head to the maker. After a couple of hours which was normal since my grandma would stop and have conversations with friends and neighbors while shopping. Catching up on all the news from, who is getting married, taking a vacation, or having a baby. She will enter her kitchen in a hurry with a basket full of seasonal vegetables, herbs, and fruits ready to cook.
The sound of dicing chopping peeling will echo through the house and later the aroma of herbs and rice and vegetables will take us to the kitchen. If I was lucky she will let me help with making spinach or lamb patties. Lovingly graciously, she would wrap a kitchen towel around me and pull a chair next to hers. I start with my small hands shaping quarter-size patties, I would have my special corner in the pan next to her perfect oval-shaped ones. I was always asking questions “ what is the green vegetable? And what is the yellow bean”? My grandmother in detail will explain, “ the green herb is mint and the yellow bean is lentil”. Then she will explain in detail again how every ingredient helps in flavoring our food and satisfying our tastebuds. She would say “Mint helps to settle your stomach since you have lentils in your food.” Every meal served was made with seasonal ingredients and was perfect for the time. Every ingredient had more than one purpose, to add flavor, and beauty, and to keep the digestive system healthy.
Trying new recipes is exhilarating and I am always happy to know I have found a new dish that my family enjoys. To make every dish perfect and original I take the time to read the recipe and stop at the grocery store to pick up everything I am missing. To create the original flavor takes patience, but all I need to remember is that every old recipe has been refined for years by experts who made it lovingly for their family, just like my grandmother did.🥰
I put up our Christmas decorations, with Nat King Cole singing to me, and a glass of eggnog waiting for me on the kitchen counter. I take Every ornament in my hand and memories rush to my head, and I smile and sometimes have tears in my eyes, remembering the days we sat at the breakfast table, glueing and sprinkling sparkles on our new creations. Our house gets filled with color. Red, green, and gold. Poinsettia plants tucked in every corner, and the smell of our new fraser fir Christmas tree fills our home. Bowls of candy, and cake pedestals filled with homemade cookies, ready to be gift wrapped for friends, and neighbors decorate my house like a Christmas card. I love sliding every heavy box filled with decorations out off the attic, and I am never surprised to hear my husband growl, when he finds a broken string of light. Even the rush drive, to buy more lights is memorable.
Today, I am collecting my Christmas decorations, and putting them back in boxes for next year. This is not one of my favorite days !! There is no music, no eggnog, only the frustration of how the same decorations refuse to fit in their original boxes?!! Christmas always seems to come too fast, and go by too fast, and I never seem to feel, I had enough time to enjoy all the memories I had pulled out of my Christmas boxes. But I am sure, I have collected more memories, with my fast growing “older” family, and I am positive I have gained few more pounds from baking Christmas cookies. For now looking forward to next year, and the hope of another Christmas, with Nat King Cole Singing to me, as I decorate my house, and drink my eggnog with a dash of tears.
It has been a few weeks, Since I have consciously tried to drink more water. I have realized that by drinking more water I can accomplish more, and feel better. I had noticed more and more in the mornings I woke up with sore muscles, and headaches. I do suffer from migraines, but my headaches were happening more often.
I did some research and realized I don’t drink enough water during the day and dehydration can cause achy muscles, and headaches. Knowing what is causing my problem I had to start drinking more water, and for me that was a difficult adjustment to make. I have never enjoyed drinking water, and I have always depended on deluding fruit juice, drink coffee, or Iced tea when I was thirsty. So I started thinking of ways I could add flavor, naturally to plain water, and hoping, better flavor would encourage me to drink more water, as I exercise, swim, Work in the garden, and just do my daily chores.
I hope this video will be a nice easy guide to encourage you to drink more water, and enjoy a more productive day. I have already started feeling better, and that is a very good sign.☺️
I use a combination of herbs fruits or vegetables to add flavor to my water. Before I leave my house I take my Yeti travel mug add ice, water, and a combination of herbs and maybe a slice of lemon or another citrus fruit like tangerine, and I am ready to start my day💪🏻☺️
Saffron crocus, from the Iris family, is a beautiful flower that produces Stigma, as we also know as saffron. The threads of saffron added to chicken or red meat produces a beautiful orange color, and sweet fragrance that makes any dish absolutely beautiful, and delicious. Since harvesting saffron is a difficult process, a small amount as little as .025oz can cost around $10.00. I have watched my grandmother, and mom cook with saffron all my life, and when I was little loved the responsibility of preparing saffron, by crushing it, and pouring it into a dish or adding it later for its color to chicken or rice.
Fortunately saffron is used in very small amounts, and a pinch (only 3-4 threads) is all you need for a platter of rice, and only a teaspoon for a pot of sauce. Saffron is high in antioxidants, helps depression, PMS symptoms, and helps with healthy vascular system.
