These days adding a new item to the grocery list means wasting time reading lines & lines of ingredients, and translating the bold writings on the packaging.

Some lables are simply meaningless. Make a mental note of what to ignore and what to look for.

Natural , doesn’t mean anything anymore,

Superfood, is being over used,

Farm fresh, another meaning less word, since if you live in the east coast & your fruits & vegtables have arrived from the west coast be sure they were packed before had the chance to ripe.

Two Things we should defenitly pay attention to :

1- FDA requires labels to mention added sugar, we shouldn’t consume more than 24g per day.

2- look for foods with less than 20 percent daily value of sodium and saturated fat, and less than 10 grams of added sugar.

Our options 

-G.M.O. vs. Non-G.M.O.

Genetically modified organisms, are not necessarily bad. But if you are scared of the term look for heirloom vegetables and  heirloom meat.

-Should we buy all organic?

It is more expensive to buy everything organic, we can look for meat raised without using antibiotics or hormones, and organic berries. When it comes to fruits & vegetables if we can wash and peel them we can buy the non organic ones.

-whole or minimally processed foods.

Processing reduces fiber minerals like potassium and vitamins like vitamin however, healthy foods like frozen vegetables, dried fruit, canned beans and whole-wheat bread, are labeled as process food but they are not lacking vitamins or minerals.

List of herbs & spices used in cooking in different countries & regions :

For French cuisine : 

Bouquet Garni: Usually tied together with string or wrapped in a cheese cloth, the “garnished bouquet” is used to flavor soups and stocks. It usually consists of sage, parsley, thyme, bay leaf and peppercorns.

For Middle Eastern cuisine :

Baharat:  common in middle eastern cooking. It is a blend of several spices that can vary geographically, but you can generally expect black pepper, coriander, paprika, cardamom ,nutmeg, cumin, cloves, and cinnamon.

Baharat can be used as a seasoning for meat, vegetables, seafood,dry rub or for marinate. It is aromatic and gives a little zest to any dish.

For South American cuisine:

Adobo Spice Mix: This mix of oregano, paprika, chilli and thyme is the base of the famous Chimichurri sauce for barbequed meat – also used as a marinade.

For Asian cuisine :

The spices that are typically used are basil, cassia (cinnamon), cilantro, coriander, chiles, cloves, cumin, galangal, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, spearmint, star anise and turmeric.

Finger licking beef dish

Tucked in a Tortilla bread with sautéed vegetables, side of salad.

So easy and delicious. And can be served at least as different three dishes.

1- Cut the beef in small strips, sautée with olive oil

2- in a seperate pan sautée onions.

3- in a sauce pan add beef broth and 2 Tbl of taco seasoning. Add the beef . Broth should almost cover the entire beef.

4- let it simmer in medium heat. Taste and try the tenderness of the beef, about 20 minutes.

6- take out the beef add the onions.

Seve with rice, or as a burrito with vegetables, or add to salad for more protein.

Where to be to celebrate Cinco de Mayo 💐

In Denver annual Cinco de Mayo festival, “Celebrate Culture,” takes place in Central Civic Park. For families there is a parade, green chili cook-off, chihuahua races and performances on three separate stages.

In Texas San Antonio’s Market Square serves as party central on May 5, with music, Tex-Mex, concerts and colorful folklorico dancing.

New York has a parade at Central Park West, complete with mariachi music, folklorico dancers and colorful floats. For those over 21 celebrate the day with a margarita Cinco de Mayo pub crawl, organized by dozens of NYC bars.

Los Angeles hosts one of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the country with a festival known as Fiesta Broadway around El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, with dancing, music, and other performances.

In Chicago Families can head to one of Chicago’s many Mexican eateries for special menus and music or watch the annual parade on Sacramento Drive in Lawndale.

San Franciscans celebrate the best of Latin American and Mexican heritage with a day-long festival at Dolores Park.

And yes Minnesota in St. Paul’s District Del Sol on the West Side hosts one of the nation’s best Cinco de Mayo celebrations. A parade down Cesar Chavez Street, a low-rider car show, a 5K race and three stages of live entertainment.

In Phoenix Patriots Square Park, is where it all happens. A chihuahua race in Chandler, live performances on the stage in Scottsdale or enjoy three days of dancing and festivities in Mesa.
