The most difficult part of replacing white sugar with healthy sweeteners is missing the convenience of sugar. Any where out of our own kitchen replacing sugar won’t be easy, but more and more places will provide honey or molasses if you just ask for it .

Date sugar– made from dried dates. Haven’t tried this one but we love adding dates cut in small pieces to oatmeal, salads, cottage cheese, eggs, and peanut butter sandwiches.

Coconut sugar– also known as coconut palm sugar or coco sap sugar, or coconut crystals is made from the sweet nectar of flower buds of the coconut palm.

Maple sugar– boiling sap from maple trees dried, powdered, and sold as maple sugar. Also great with cinnamon or ginger for added flavor to sweet potatoes, and grilled vegetables.

Snacking before bed is Good. There is nothing wrong with having a snack before we go to bed. It is easy to stay up late finishing a project or cleaning up before bed, and as you get ready for bed you realize the last time you ate was dinner, many hours ago. Nothing is worst than going to bed with a grumbling stomach.

4 important facts about snacking before bedtime.

1- It should be only a snack

2- Choose a snack that won’t keep you up.

3- Snack we pick should be light on the stomach and low on fat content.

4- No sugary, caffeinated, or spicy food.

Any snack with complex carbs and protein will release amino acids into our body that could actually help us sleep better at night.

Cauliflowers are delicious & good for us

A great side dish, this yummy vegetable has every vitamin required in a healthy diet. Eating it raw or cooked keeps our heart healthy, and is rich in antioxidants that help keep our immune system strong.

*Cauliflower coated in eggs & sautéed .

1- Breakup the cauliflower in small florets. The easiest way is cut the stem and start cutting off the florets individually.

2- In a bowl break 4 eggs add salt & pepper.

3- Boil the florets so you can pick one easily with a fork.

4- Drain the water pick each floret and dunk them in the egg bowl.

5- Place them on their side in a pan with olive oil. Sauté until golden.

Tea has antioxidants. Drinking tea can help with losing weight, also help with keeping our heart healthy, and has less caffeine so it helps to calm our nerves.

We are putting together a pot of tea using loose leaf earl grey, and exotic sweets and sweetners to make it fun.

How to keep our skin healthy in winter?

5 Most important facts for healthy looking  skin in cold temperatures.

1- lock in moisture:

Pamper your skin by using honey, buttermilk, avocado, yogurt, olive and jojoba oils, almond oil, bananas and aloe.

2- Stay hydrated :

Hydrate with a humidifier, or by drinking water.

3- Eat your vegtables, celery, and cucumbers for high water content, and omega3 fats like salmon, olive oil and walnuts.

4- Choose natural soaps to avoid the alcohol and chemicals that cause dryness.

Tips for cleaning

We started our new year with decluttrring   and organizing, and in the process we learned a few good tips for cleaning.

Laundry

For those impossible stains from butter, salad dressing, cooking oil, use white chalk or corn starch on the spot. Let it absorb the oil and launder as usual.

Bathroom

Remove stubborn stains around the faucet with vinegar. Soak paper towel or cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the stained faucet. Let it stand for several hours and rinse. Or with a tooth brush use a paste of vinegar and baking soda around the faucet.

Smelly helmets

Place it in a large ziplock bag and leave it in the freezer.  The subzero temperature will kill the bacteria causing the smell.

Table linens with candle wax 

place them in the freezer, when the wax spot gets hard just scrape it off.

Musty smell

Leave a box of open baking soda in the linen closet.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Persimmons “ The fruit of the gods”

So sweet and delicious these beautiful fruits originally from China are in season from October to February.

More than 100 varieties we are only familiar with two. The fuyu and hachiya persimmons. The fuyu variety the flat and round shape is full of flavor when they are just soft to the touch, but the acorn shape the hachiya needs to be perfectly rip, very soft to touch before it is sweet and flavorful.

Loaded with vitamins, persimmons are good for our heart, immune system, and are an excellent source of powerful antioxidants like carotenoids and flavonoids.

We are aiming for a year of super organize, discipline, and well informed .

These are the reasons why:

It is a fact that less clutter in our living and work space will help with,

1- Lowering stress, we start feeling like we can breath better

2- Creating a safer home, less chance of bumping into things

3- Spreading less germs, easier to clean thoroughly

4- Reducing allergy and asthma symptoms (less dust ..)

5- Lowering anxiety, easier to find things

6- Discouraging insects to stay around, with more space we do better job of cleaning

7- less junk food purchase when we keep an organized kitchen

8- Less clutter, more open space, in the closet, kitchen, and bathrooms

9- Easier time to clean

10- Less chance of wasting money on things we don’t need

Plan on :

Each day for few minutes put things away before leaving the house. It will help to stay organize, and less chance of starting the clutter habit. Start the mind set of, getting things done.

Keep in mind if we purchase something new, it is time to give away something you have not looked at for a while.

 

 

 

 

Stuck indoors, dumbbell curls

Yes, cold icy roads and school is out we are stuck indoors with kids, that would love nothing more than more time staring at their iPads, and snack-on till bed time.

Nothing will make the brain function better than the good old blood circulation through our veins, so make it a game and bring the dumbbells ( water bottles ) out.

there are many indoor activities that can be fun and easy to do with some music & good company.
